Atakapa-Ishak Trail

 
 

Phase I

Project Location:
            Lafayette Parish
Limits of Project:
            Phase I- From Parc Sans Souci Downtown to Beaver Park on the southwest side of US Hwy 90.
Estimated Project Cost (Phase I):
            $100,000
Funding Agency:
            Phase I is funded by an FHWA Recreational Trails Grant
Project Description:
            The Atakapa-Ishak Trail is a multi-phased, multi-use trail that will ultimately connect Lafayette to the nearby communities of Breaux Bridge and St. Martinville. The Trail is named in honor of the Atakapa-Ishak Indian Tribe who inhabited the SE Texas and SW Louisiana coastal region, including the prairies from St. Martinville to Opelousas. Phase I of the AI Trail will consist of Shared Roadway, a Bike Lane and a Shared Sidewalk (for both bikes and pedestrians) and will connect downtown Lafayette to Beaver Park and the Vermilion River.
Schedule:
            Phase 1 of the AI Trail opened for use in February 2012.

Phase II

Project Location:
            Lafayette Parish
Limits of Project:
            Phase 2- From Beaver Park on the southwest side of US Hwy 90 to Jean Lafitte Acadian Cultural Center (via newly constructed underpass at US 90)
Estimated Project Cost (Phase II):
            $120,000
Funding Agency:
            Phase 2 is funded by and FHWA Recreational Trails Grant
Project Description:
            Phase 2 of the Trail will consist of Shared Roadway and an off-road Constructed Multi-Use Path; this portion of the trail will terminate at a trailhead to be located on the grounds of the Jean Lafitte Acadian Cultural Center.
Schedule:
            Planning and Construction throughout 2012-2013.
